Apple Pie Dress

This is my new favorite.  We have dubbed it the Apple Pie Dress.  Why? because it looks so sweet on and it is as American as.... you guessed it... apple pie.

Perfect for picnics, parades, fireworks, and day trips to the Alaska Sea Life Center.

You should have heard her squeal when she touched that thing. 



It was a little chilly down by the ocean in Seward, so we had to throw on a little sweater. I also made a little pair of ruffled capris just for added sweetness.  Can you believe that view.  I grew up in Alaska and still the awesome beauty of it never fails to impress me.  


But back home here in Utah this is just right for keeping cool.


And although it was the picnic plaid print that originally inspired this dress, I find I really love the chevron seam on the bodice.  It was my first time trying chevron seams and I am very please with how they turned out. 

Making a chevron seam is actually pretty easy.


When you cut out your pieces cut first piece so the stripes are how you would like them and then cut your second piece turned 90 degrees from that.  You can check that you did it right by laying the pieces right sides together and they should line up.  Then sew then together with the lines all lined up and you should have a perfect little V.

Chocolate Fudge Frosting Just Like Grandma Used to Make. Well as long as Grandma made really good chocolate fudge frosting.

My Alan recently had a birthday and his cake of choice was triple chocolate cake with chocolate fudge frosting.  He is a smart boy.

This frosting is a classic and don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to just eat it with a spoon.



Chocolate Fudge Frosting
Will frost about 24-30 cupcakes.

1 cup butter
7-8 ounces of unsweetened chocolate (you can use the squares or the powder, just make sure you follow the directions on the powder i.e. you will need more butter)
2 lbs confectioner's sugar (powdered sugar)
1 generous ;) teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of milk

Melt the chocolate and butter on low in a small sauce pot or if you have one use a double boiler.  I don't have one but I have never had a problem just using a pot for this recipe.  In your mixer combine confectioner's sugar, vanilla, and 1 cup of milk.  Blend in the melted chocolate.  Add the rest of the milk until you get the consistency you want.
Then let it stand (usually about 5 mins) and it will be ready.  The frosting will get thicker as it cools.


And since you might be wondering what is in triple chocolate cake: it is a box of chocolate cake mix, a large box of chocolate pudding, 1 cup or so mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, 4 eggs, 1 cup oil, 1 cup sour cream, and 1/2 cup of water all mixed together and baked at 350 degrees.   So basically it is really good.
