My Master Bedroom - Covered Lampshade Tutorial

Seriously... Covering these lamp shades made all the difference.

The shades are just the cheap ones from Target and if I had left them white the room would have been blah.

And maybe it is just I am IN LOVE with the fabric I used, but I think they are the perfect pop of color.

Making your own personalized pop of color (ie recovered lamp shades) is really easy.

Depending on how big your lamp shade is you will need about 1.5 yards of fabric.  Since this lamp shade got smaller at the top I had to make sure I had enough overhang to cover the whole shade when I rolled it.

So roll it onto the shade and then use a little hot glue to tack it down.  I use a low temp glue gun.  I high temp gun could melt the shade.  (Plus at low temp gun hurts a little less when you burn yourself... and you will burn yourself.)

Roll the other end of the fabric, trim it straight, pull it tight, and fold over the edge a little bit.  Then carefully glue it down.

Now trim off the extra.  I used a rotary cutter because it is cleaner, but you can use scissors.

Then fold over the edge, gluing it down as you go.  This is the part where you will most likely burn yourself on hot glue.  Be careful.  You could also cover it with ribbon around the edge or something, but I liked it just as it was.

  3. Beautiful! I have a question. What if you want to recover a lampshade that is not white? Would it still work? I have gold lamp shades I want to recover. I can't just replace them because the lamps are odd shapes. And I can't replace the lamps because I am in love with the dimmer the lamps do. If you think you could advise me on this send me an e-mail and I'll send you a pic of the lamps I want to redo. I would SO appreciate your suggestions!

  4. I love how you just wing it!! You don't complicate it. No pattern or anything. Glue the fabric on, cut it off, and finish. lol Simple.
